The Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is one of the main industry groups at IFC, responsible for managing roughly 40% of IFC's overall business in terms of volume and capital at risk. FIG engages in a wide range of sub-sectors including Microfinance, small and medium enterprise (SME) finance, Gender finance, Climate finance, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing finance, Distressed Assets, Payments, Fintech, and other areas, with both investment and advisory services delivered to IFC's clients through its global network.
IFC's priorities in FIG as an industry group are: (i) grow investment and advisory solutions in all regions it operates in, while achieving strong profitability and development impact (ii) build new and nurture existing client relationships to make IFC the preferred partner for key clients (iii) manage portfolio of assets for strong profitability and impact; (iv) support local companies, while improving transparency and corporate governance; (v) catalyze foreign investment, including mobilizing B loans, parallel loans, and other forms of capital mobilization; (vi) introduce and develop new financial solutions, products and platforms; (vii) build long-term partnerships with strong regional players; (viii) develop client, sector and country-level solutions through upstream and downstream interventions that can be scaled and replicated; and (ix) be a thought leader and innovator of products and client solutions globally.
One of the main areas of strategic focus for FIG is Capital Markets and strengthening of the capital markets of its emerging member countries. IFC has long-standing programs for providing support for a wide range of securities issuances by emerging market (EM) clients and is looking to expand its investment activities. A main business line is Capital Markets Innovation, JCAP, Debt Funds and Capital Optimization where the team works in close collaboration with FIG's regional teams, Treasury, Sector Economics and other IFC Operational departments to expand IFC's capital markets activities.
The Global Capital Markets Team is seeking a capital markets investment officer with market and industry experience to help grow and develop its business in emerging markets. This position will complement the existing cadre of Investment Officers and specialists who deliver on Capital Markets Development and Innovation. This position will require previous structuring and execution experience in debt capital markets and or structured finance. The position will also lead coordination across IFC Operational departments while complementing the existing cadre of Investment Officers and specialists. The position will be based in Washington DC.
Roles & Responsibilities
The Investment Officer will have a wide range of evolving responsibilities in line with strategic priorities of FIG. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
⢠Identify capital market solutions for FIG clients, developing a strong pipeline of quality investment opportunities for IFC, through employing knowledge and experience of capital markets and anticipating market trends.
⢠Add value to IFC's clients, find pragmatic solutions to sector challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact.
⢠Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions; use strong negotiation skills to develop solutions; mobilize other investors alongside IFC.
⢠Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, global and regional private businesses, banking and multilateral partners and government officials to further develop the sector and to develop specific investment opportunities.
⢠Collaborate within team and with the regional teams to develop global and regional capital markets strategies and support related promotion work.
⢠Coordinate with other units and other departments, IFC Treasury and others within IFC to ensure all the required support to develop new business opportunities and to efficiently manage both new and existing portfolio investments.
⢠Disseminate knowledge across the industry group and promote knowledge-sharing within FIG as well as more broadly across IFC.
⢠Assist in other project or strategy related activities, as the need may arise.
Selection Criteria
⢠Master's degree in finance, economics, or other related areas. Candidates with MBA, CPA, or CFA would have an advantage.
⢠Minimum 8-10 years of relevant capital markets experience in emerging markets, with track record in Capital Optimization products, local currency and cross-border bond issuances, financial derivatives, securitizations.
⢠Strong experience in and in-depth understanding of sector drivers, business, and market development cycles, and how business performance and long-term competitiveness and viability are measured within a sector and how sector dynamics may evolve within a country or region.
⢠Excellent analytical and technical skills. Proven analytical and financial analysis, skills to analyze and form conclusions on company financial information or projects and industry indicators. Strong credit skills and business judgment.
⢠Ability to oversee and provide quality control feedback on work prepared more junior team members.
⢠Ability to build productive and mutually beneficial relationships and networks internally and externally to identify business opportunities, discuss structuring alternatives, and resolve issues.
⢠Ability to interact directly and independently with the senior management of potential clients, of financial and technical partners as well as senior government officials.
⢠Commitment to sustainable development.
⢠Original thinking / quick learning abilities with strong initiative and drive, as well as attention to details.
⢠Ability to work with teams within IFC, WBG, and other DFIs to mobilize private sectors investors and increase financing to emerging markets.
⢠Emerging Markets Experience. Knowledge and experience in international economic development areas and commitment to sustainable development.
⢠Great team player with strong interpersonal skills, and commitment to work in a respectful, team oriented and multi-cultural environment.
⢠Sound business judgment and strong problem-solving skills to identify risks and present creative, practical solutions
⢠Solid understanding of relevant trends and issues in Capital Markets
⢠Open to feedback and willingness to learn
⢠Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines
⢠Excellent oral and written presentation skills in English are required; additional major language (French, Spanish)
⢠Willingness to travel.
